Commentary on ‘Aqidat al-Tahawi by Shaykh Qari Muhammad Tayyib al-Qasimi

Attached is the English translation of the marginal commentary of Shaykh Qari Muhammad Tayyib, former rector of the renowned Dar al-‘Ulum in Deoband, India. The translation isn’t great, nor is the typesetting, but it will help students of ‘Aqidah studying in English but without access to the highly beneficial Arabic commentaries.

As for the best translation of the actual Tahawi text, it is without doubt Sh. Hamzah Yusuf’s, although there are a couple places where it could be improved.

    • Assalamu ‘alaykum,

There are a few improvements that can be made. Besides one lone mistranslated passage (which may be just my misreading of the Arabic), there are a few places where the Azami translation reads easier for the average reader. When teaching the book, I chose to re-translate those articles in light of the confusion that was expressed by some students in understanding them. Otherwise, the translation is the most precise and true to the Arabic. I assume that the minor error in the translation as well as other improvements will be made by author himself in an upcoming edition. From what I know, the first edition was rushed a bit.

  1. Assalaamu ‘alaykum

Do you know where I can purchase or download a pdf of the original Arabic of Qari Tayyib’s (ra) commentary on Aqidah Tahawiyyah?

  2. Salam, in multiple instances within the book, Qari Tayyib Saheb mentions a “تتمة”. Having read through the entire book, I was kind of left hanging. Are you aware where this can be found if it even exists?

    • Al-salam ‘alaykum,

In certain editions of the book, the tatimmah is attached to the end of the work and is titled “Mabānī al-Khilāfah wa-l-Siyāsah al-Dīniyyah wa Ghāyatuhā. It essentially discusses issues related to inner dimensions of the khilāfah. It is approximately ten pages long in the edition I have.
