Read More »

Faraz Abdul Moid's avatarat-Tahawi

asSalaamu Alaikum,

The Rules of Ramadan, a translation of أحكام رمضان authored by Mufti Muhammad Shafi Usmani (ra).

Translated by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Harun Abasoomar (db).

In this concise booklet the Honourable Muftī Muhammad Shafi Sahib (r.a.) has outlined the very basic rules of the blessed month of Ramadān.

These rules are undoubtedly very pertinent and important. It is hoped that the reader studies this booklet prior to and during the blessed month of Ramadān.

In conclusion we have included some questions and answers pertaining to the various aspects of Ramadān. These have been adapted from the ask- imām.com website which is the official website of the Iftā department of the Madrasah.

We hope to update this section with other references in future editions – Insha Allāh-.

An index has also been added so that the reader may locate his query easily.

Brief Comments on “The Qur’an: The New Translation” by MAS Abdel Haleem

Bilal Ali's avatarBilal Ali

This translation of the meanings of the Qur’an – which I wish the cover articulated clearer instead of just “The Qur’an” in large print – is one of three translations of the Qur’an’s meanings that I use the most. The other two are Ahmad Zaki Hammad and Ali Unal’s translations. I am aware of other quality works, but I find that these three more or less do the job for me. The Majestic Qur’an was a book I used quite often, but it was very hard to find and I had borrowed it from a library. Though I’ve missed it, I find the other three suffice quite well.

Compared to Hammad’s The Gracious Qur’an, I found this translation more lucid in places and reads better without the need for parenthetical filler expressions. However, in some places, I found the author taking a bit of liberty in the translations of words…

The American Muslim (TAM) List of Recommended Books on Islam

The American Muslim List of Recommended Books on Islam

by Sheila Musaji

The books listed here are books that we recommend.  This list began with the publication of The American Muslim Resource Directory in 1994.  At that time we asked 35 people to submit information about the books about Islam that they would most highly recommend.  This list was published in the directory with the initials of those who had recommended the book listed after the entry, and with the books that had received the most recommendations noted.  This new list began with that original list and has expanded over the years.

This list will be continually updated.  Most of these books can be found in our book section listed alphabetically and available to order from Amazon.com.  If you plan to order through Amazon we would appreciate your clicking on the Amazon links here as that will help us Insh’Allah earn enough to pay the expenses of maintaining this website.  If you have recommendations, please send them along.

(The individuals who began this list were:  Mona abul-Fadl, Carole Ahmed, Amir Ali, Khadija Asad, Steven Barboza, Zahra Buttar, Vincent Cornell, Robert D. Crane, Jamal Elias, Alan Godlas, Suzanne Haneef, Kabir Helminski, Gray Henry, Robert Hurd, Muminah Kowalski, Maulana Syed Jalali, Jeffrey Lang, Sheila Mmusaji, Akram Safadi, Yahya Monastra, Daniel Abd al-Hayy Moore, Aminah McCloud, Gred Noakes, Akram Safadi, Ahmad Sakr, Imam Alauddn Shabazz, Shemim Siddiqui, Benyameed VonHattum, Abu Munir Winkel, Michael Wolfe, Mohamed Zakariya)Read More »

A Critical Reading of Martin Lings’ Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources

Foreword to the first Swedish translation © GF Haddad 2005

Twenty-three years after its first publication in 1983, Muḥammad: his life based on the earliest sources by the late Abū Bakr Sirāj al-Dīn (Martin Lings, d. 2004) continues its lead as the best-written work of Prophetic biography in English and has now been translated into a dozen languages. The readers’ blurbs from distinguished writers on the back cover call it “superb… scrupulous… exhaustive… mesmerising… easy and absorbing… enthralling… engrossing… majestic… gripping… fascinat[ing].” Indeed, Lings’ lofty English, his knowledge of genealogy, his reflexive and worshipful narrative style, and his excellent adab with the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) all deserve such glowing praise.
