The following book is one of the more modern works on ‘aqidah, but also arguably one of the better ones. Like the recently uploaded Kubra al-Yaqiniyyat al-Kawniyyah, the book is organized very well and simplifies issues of creed usually considered very difficult to understand.
Assalam o alaykum,
Can you give some background information about the author?
JazakAllah.
Assalamu ‘alaykum,
Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahman Hasan Habannakah al-Maydani (1927-2004 AD) was born in Damascus, the son of a great scholar, Shaykh Muhammad Hasan Habannakah al-Maydani. His initial education was conducted under his father at his famed institution, Ma’had al-Tawjih al-Islami.
After graduation from the Ma’had, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahman taught at the institution for several years until he decided to travel to Cairo and continue his studies at the Dar al-‘Ulum al-Azhar. He graduated with a specialization in Education and Teaching in 1954.
He later returned to Syria and taught at a number of institutions there until 1967 when he moved to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He taught at Jami’ah Riyadh and Jami’at Umm al-Qura in Makkah for nearly ten decades. He also conducted a nationally broadcast radio program for nine years.
He wrote around forty books on a wide variety of topics, including ‘aqidah, rhetoric, philosophy, debate, history, da’wah, and poetry.
Amongst his more well-known and published works is the above al-‘Aqidah al-Islamiyyah.
Here is the bio of whom I thought was the Shaykh’s uncle, but according to this bio, it was his brother:
Shaykh Saadiq Habannakah al-Shafi`i al-Maydani
by GF Haddad (Sunna-Principles Yahoogroup)
Shaykh Saadiq Habannakah al-Shafi`i al-Maydani
passed away a few days ago in his late eighties. Rahimahullah.
I heard Shaykh Muhammad al-Ya`qubi say that it would be right Shaykh Sadiq be considered the Shaykh al-Islam of the people of Shaam, most notably for the Shafi`i School.
There is none left of his caliber although Shaykh Mustafa al-Khinn shares his fame, but he no longer teaches. Both were graduates at the hands of Shaykh Sadiq’s father, the great Mujahid Shaykh Hasan Habannakah, as was also, among his remaining living students in Damascus, the Mujaddid of the Religion Dr. Sa`id al-Buti, Shaykh al-Qurra’ Shaykh Kurayyim Rajih, and Shaykh Muhammad Kamil Sharbaji who flees from the limelight. Shaykh `Abd al-
Rahman, Shaykh Sadiq’s brother, passed away a few years ago.
Shaykh Sadiq’s classes on Shafi`i Fiqh, most recently al-Iqna` in Jami` Manjak in the historic Maydan neighborhood of Damascus, were heavily attended, especially by southeast Asia students. He possessed a wry sense of humor even in his late age. His countenance was full of light. His mind, deportment and outmoded dress mirrored the shuyukh and awliya of bygone times more than any of his contemporaries. He will not be replaced.
Inna lillahi wa-inna ilayhi raji`un.
Was-Salam,
GF Haddad
Assalam o alaykum,
JazakAllah Mawlana Sahib for the swift reply. That was very helpful. As you have mentioned, the book seems very simplified and easy to understand.
GF Haddad was corrected for calling him his brother, when he is his uncle.
It is also Mustafa al-Khann, not al-Khinn.
GF acknowledged both mistakes saying:
Received from a reader:
“Some of this information is not accurate. Shaykh Hasan is the
brother of Shaykh Saadiq, not his father. Shaykh Abdurrahman is the
son of Shaykh Hasan, not his brother. Therefore, Shaykh Saadiq is the
uncle of Shaykh Abdurrahman, not his brother. It is correct, however,
that Shaykh Hasan was the teacher of both Shaykh Saadiq and Shaykh
Abdurrahman. RaHmatu l-laahi `alayhim jamee`an.
“Shaykh Mustafa al-Khinn” should be Shaykh Mustafa al-Khann.”
I stand corrected on both counts. Jazakum Allahu khayran.
