The Ultimate Conspectus: A Translation of Abu Shuja’ al-Asfahani’s Matn al-Ghayah wa ‘l-Taqrib

Recently, I was blessed with a gift from the esteemed and beloved scholar Shaykh Musa Furber, a link to his new translation of Abu Shuja’ al-Asfahani’s Matn al-Ghayah wa al-Taqrib, a renowned Shafi’i fiqh text, in electronic format. The book has not yet been sent for hardcopy print and had just been released online, making all the more enjoyable to be amongst the first to read it.

I downloaded the iBooks version on my iPad and have been enjoying reading it since. The translation, as expected, is clear, precise, and fluid. I say “as expected” because anyone familiar with Shaykh Musa’s translations knows of his prowess in the field.

The book is available for download on iPhones, iPads, or iPod touches using iBooks and on computers with iTunes. I’ve included a brief description of the work below taken from iTunes. The iTunes link is http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/the-ultimate-conspectus/id550128867?mt=11&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

Description

A translation of Abū Shujā‘ah al-Aṣfahānī’s introduction to classical Islamic law. This enduring classic covers the full range of basic topics within the Shāfi‘ī school of law. It includes the full Arabic text and notes to point out where later Shāfi‘ī jurists have differed from the author, Imām al-Nawawī’s preferences, and minor clarifications and explanations.
