A Reading List: Great Books of Islamic Civilization

The intellectual tradition of Islamic civilization is both incredibly vast and delightfully diverse. Within this immense corpus of intellectual wealth, certain works enjoy an authority that endures time because these “great books” shaped entire disciplines, helped form curricula, or preserved modes of thought across centuries.

The following list, produced by N.A. Baloch, comprises the table of contents of his annotated bibliography of eighty (or so, according to my rough count) works written in the classical period of Islam, entitled Great Books of Islamic Civilization and published by the Pakistan Hijra Council in Islamabad in 1409 AH/1989 AD, and later by Kitab Bhavan in 2006. Baloch has classified these great books under eleven categories, and under each entry, introduces the author and the book in brief with varying degrees of accuracy, using some information from the original texts, but also largely from translated editions and secondary sources.

Reading even the list of entries offers a rare and curated pathway into the Islamic literary tradition. The list brings together foundational texts across the major domains of learning in the Islamic world, including Quran and Hadith studies, theology, law, philosophy, ethics, governance, and history. The aim of the author, and the Pakistan Hijra Council that commisioned it compilation, is not to be exhaustive, but simply to provide a basic orientation. Each work arguably represents a gateway into one of the many disciplines explored in Islamic civilization. In short, the list bears witness to the intellectual maturity of the civilization that produced it.

This list can serve students, researchers, and general readers who are seeking a structured approach to the great books of the Islamic scholarly heritage. In particular, it is hoped that this list will be of immediate benefit to the students of my Introduction to the Islamic Disciplines course (offered by Usul Academy) and students of the Darul Qasim College Shaykh al-Hind and Intermediate programs.

My contribution to this reading list is editorial. Where N.A. Baloch has listed the titles in translated form (with rare exceptions), I have provided a transliteration of the original titles and made corrections to spellings of titles and names where I was able to identify them. I also modified the category titles to conform to a more native English academic usage. I realize that I should add the dates of death of the authors at some point and re-add the omitted translated titles. I just don’t have time for that currently. If someone can offer assistance in this regard, I would be very grateful.
