Malik’s Concept of ‘Amal in the Light of Maliki Legal Theory by Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah

One a number of occasions, some acquaintances and students have requested a copy of Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah’s thorough UofC PhD thesis on the concept of inherited practice (‘amal) in the light of Maliki legal theory (usul). Because I was once told that the work had been published, I withheld posting a pdf of the book temporarily. Unfortunately, I still haven’t been able to get a hold of a published copy and can’t seem to find any such book at the more well-known online bookstore sites. I am beginning to doubt that any published form of the book even exists.

In any case, instead of waiting to obtain a copy, I have decided to suffice with what I have and upload the typewritten pdf version of his dissertation here. The copy I have is divided into eight files. If anyone has a more condensed version of the book, please do share.

  1. as-Salamu Alaykum

I have a copy of this as a single pdf document. At 819 pages it seems to be longer as well!

  2. Assalamu alaikum,

I believe Dr. Umar intends on publishing it soon. Someone should confirm with him if possible as he might be averse to it being available as a PDF document online.

In general though, jazak Allahu khayran for an excellent website.

  4. Assalamu alaykum,

I will try to contact Dr Umar about the PDF and ask his permission to keep it up on the site. Jzk Shaykh Faraz for the reminder. On a side note, congratulations on your wonderful translation of Maraqi al-Sa’adat. It is a much needed contribution to the growing body of English fiqh literature and likely to become a textbook of study in schools, weekend courses, etc… worldwide. I plan on writing a short review of the book when possible, in sha Allah.

  5. Assalamu alaykum,

Jzk this is an excellent resource.

I agree Dr Umar should be consulted regarding permission.

However, this PHd has been on the web for a decade or more on other reputable sites.

Also, i have access to umi proquest where this PHd or any other can be dowmloaded for usage with great ease.

The main issue would be as long as people are not gaining from or use it for a financial gain without Dr Umar’s permission that would be totally wrong.

From a gaining knowledge perspective it should be fine.

Anyhow, once again excellent resource, thanks.

    Wasalam.
